A new look without new stone
Replacing countertops with natural stone or quartz means demolition, templating, fabrication and weeks of waiting. Epoxy countertops offer another path. We pour a durable, seamless epoxy surface directly over your existing laminate, tile or solid-surface counters, or over a new substrate, and create a custom look in place. The finished surface can mimic white marble, dark granite, swirling metallic stone or the blue and green tones of the bay.
Epoxy counters are popular for kitchen updates, bathroom vanities, home bars, laundry rooms, rental refreshes and garage workbenches. They are also used in cafes and small shops where owners want a distinctive counter without the cost of stone.
How the process works
We start by inspecting the existing counters for sound structure. Loose laminate or tile is secured, chips and gaps are filled and the surface is sanded for adhesion. We protect cabinets, floors and walls with plastic and tape. A primer coat goes down first, followed by a base color. Then we pour and work the decorative epoxy, using pigments and tools to create veins, swirls or patterns. The epoxy self-levels and runs over the edges, which we smooth and shape. After curing, we apply a clear topcoat for scratch and heat resistance.
Popular styles
White marble with gray veins is the most requested look, especially in kitchens with white or light cabinets. Black and gold veining suits dramatic kitchens and bars. Metallic swirls in silver, bronze or copper give a modern, artistic surface. Ocean-inspired pours with blues, teal and white look stunning in bathrooms and coastal-style homes. Solid colors with subtle texture work well in laundry rooms and workshops.
Durability and limits
Epoxy counters are hard, waterproof and seamless, so spills wipe up easily and there are no grout lines to stain. They are not as heat resistant as stone, so we always recommend trivets for hot pans. They can scratch under sharp knives, so cutting boards are a must. With sensible care, an epoxy counter keeps its shine for years, and the topcoat can be refreshed if it dulls.
Kitchens and bathrooms
In kitchens, we work around sinks, cooktops and backsplashes, removing or masking fixtures as needed. Undermount sinks may need special detailing, while drop-in sinks are simpler. In bathrooms, epoxy creates a seamless vanity top that resists water and cleans easily. We can also coat backsplashes to match.
Bars, islands and workbenches
Home bars and islands are great canvases for bold designs, since they are often the focal point of a room. Garage workbenches get tough, solid-color finishes that resist oil and solvents. Butcher block and live-edge wood can be sealed with clear epoxy to protect the grain and bring out its color.
Timeline
Most kitchen projects take two to three days, including prep, pour and topcoat, plus curing time before light use. Full cure usually takes about a week, and we recommend gentle use during that period. Plan for the kitchen to be out of service for a few days while the counters cure.
Rental and investment properties
Landlords and investors often use epoxy counters to refresh units between tenants without the cost and downtime of stone. A durable, attractive counter helps a unit show well and stands up to daily use. We can schedule work around turnover dates.
Care
Clean with warm water and mild dish soap. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemicals. Use trivets for hot cookware and boards for cutting. Wipe up strong colored liquids such as red wine and turmeric promptly. If the surface becomes dull or scratched over years, a light sanding and new topcoat restore it.
